Read the book that's getting conversion therapy banned in CanadaWinner of the Independent Book Publisher Award, Finalist for the Randy Shilts Award for Gay Nonfiction and the Saints and Sinners Emerging Writer Award."Unforgettable... This book is appallingly appropriate in these times." ― FOREWORD REVIEWS This resonant and acclaimed memoir recounts the six years that the author spent in a bizarre form of conversion therapy that attempted to "cure" him of his homosexuality, and the inspiring story of how he cast out shame and reclaimed his life.Kept with other patients in a cult-like home in British Columbia, Canada, Peter Gajdics was under the authority of a dominating, rogue psychiatrist who controlled his patients, in part, by creating and exploiting a false sense of family. Juxtaposed against his parents' tormented past–his mother's incarceration and escape from a communist concentration camp in post-World War II Yugoslavia, and his father's upbringing as an orphan in war-torn Hungary, The Inheritance of Shame explores the universal themes of childhood trauma, oppression, and intergenerational pain. “DEEPLY MOVING." ― THE ADVOCATE“RAW AND UNFLINCHING" ― KIRKUS REVIEWS“A HERO’S JOURNEY IN WHICH ANY READER, GAY OR STRAIGHT, CAN FIND INSPIRATION.” ― LAMBDA LITERARY FOUNDATIONAll over the United States and Canada, districts, cities and states are banning conversion, ex-gay and reparative therapies. A powerful example of "healing through memoir," this book offers the most complete and compelling reason for those bans to date. A groundbreaking memoir, The Inheritance of Shame offers insights into overcoming all kinds of shame, especially that which has trickled down from previous generations, and into the complicated but all-too-worthwhile process of forgiveness.

At this time of writing, The Audiobook The Inheritance of Shame: A Memoir has garnered 9 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Audiobook is Good TO READ!

This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the horrors that homophobic psychiatrists inflicted on their patients in the not-so-distant past. It is the author's memoir of six years of psychatric torture aiming to cure him of his homosexuality. Although the Canadian Psychiatric Association never said that homosexuality was a mental illness, a diabolical charlatan of a psychiatrist called Alfonzo managed to torment and persecute poor Peter. On page 155 it becomes obvious that Alfonzo is a paranoid schizophrenic since he calls himself Christ. Only schizophrenics have messiah complexes. This revelation confirmed what I had suspected from the beginning of the book, and that is that Alfonzo's hysterical campaign against homosexuality was caused by the repression of his own homosexuality. We know today that the most common cause of schizophrenia is the repression of homosexuality, and Alfonzo has all the symptoms. This story is actually a hymn to human resilience , for Peter manages to survive; he finds the strength to achieve reconciliation with his parents, who have suffered so much, despite the horrible things that Alfonzo had said about them. As Nietzsche said, if hardship does not kill you, it will make you stronger, and Peter is an example of that. The reader cannot help admiring him and wanting to give him a big hug.His story is similar to mine, which I tell in my book What Rough Beast. When we were sixteen years old, my rommmate and I were forced by the Phillips Exeter Academy to undergo psychiatric treatment in order to be cured of our homosexuality, with the result that he committed suicide and I underwent an acute paranoid schizophrenic psychosis and was hospitalized in insane asylums for fifteen months. But that was in the United States in the sixties, and the American Psychiatric Association decreed that homosexuality was a mental illness until December 15, 1973. Like Peter, who moved to his father's native Hungary, I sought salvation by going back to my roots and moving to Ireland, where my grandmother had been born.
