I’ve read all six of the Anderson/Costello books now and they’re very well written - it’s just a shame that Caro Ramsay feels it necessary to populate her books with grotesques - serial killers, Russian mafia, Glaswegian gangsters, and in the latest one, sub-teenage sociopaths coupled with genius psychopathic parents who run rings around the Glasgow plods. The kill/murder rate in all her books is always impressive but she really ratchets it up in this one, together with a range of murderous methods that she must have been saving for the right occasion - from the initial body that is torn limb from limb, through petrol-soaked pensioners, to police officers being dangled off a bridge so they can be struck and splattered by an oncoming train, to more conventional means like arrows, strangulation, impalement and bludgeoned with rocks, Caro covers them all. In her previous epic she covered bullets and being bitten by dogs so one assumes she’ll have to start getting really creative in her future books. It’s really a shame that she doesn’t let her characters develop into real people instead of being bystanders at a freak show. She writes very well but there’s such a level of gothic fury in her murderous villains that she can’t be taken seriously. Pity.
