Meg Jennings and Hawk, her black lab, work for the FBI. Hawk is multi-talented, as he can find track missing people or bad guys or even find the dead at disaster scenes. I like dog stories, and I follow a couple of other series that figure a working dog and its handler. But this one didn't ring true for me, and I never felt like I knew the characters well enough to care. Each chapter starts with a definition of a search and rescue or another FBI term (as if it's a training book), which is annoying. In fact, lots of the chapters, especially the first half of the book, seemed like a fictionalized teaching exercise instead of the story of real people and animals and their lives. I don't want to get into spoilers here, but I also think it's not realistic that Meg (who is supposedly just the dog-handler part of the team) does some unauthorized and maybe even illegal things to try to take the lead in the investigation. That was annoying, too. Can't deny that the last 30% of the book was exciting. Lots of readers loved it. Me, not enough to pick up the next in the series. I'll stick to my other dog & dog-handler series, which are (for me) more realistic and still exciting reads.
